The two reviewers that gave this shaver a 1-star rating may have been a bit too harsh. This shaver is an extremely good buy for the money. After using an expensive Norelco shaver for the past 7 or so years, it finally died on me a few weeks ago and I figured I'd try a cheap replacement for a change.
I decided on the Remington MS280 from a local retailer and took it home to test it out for a few weeks. The shaver comes with a pretty liberal return policy so I figured I had nothing to lose. To make a long story short, here are the pros and cons for this little guy:
Pros:
1. Shaves like a dream. I'm serious. This shaver can do a decent job in about 1-2 minutes and it can leave my face silky smooth in about 5 minutes with a few extra passes. To say I was impressed with the shave quality is an understatement.
2. It's cheap. I mean, it's so cheap you might think twice about buying replacements blades and screens since they cost almost as much as the shaver itself. Now, the replacement blades/screens for more expensive shavers are just about the same price, the only difference is that when you compare those to buying a new $200 shaver, the choice is pretty clear.
3. The charge holds for a few days at least for me. I haven't really kept track of it but I can say with certainty that I've used it for at least 4 days without recharging it.
With that in mind, here are the...
Cons:
1. It's loud! Not "man, this is kind loud!" loud... It's more like "who disguised a weedwacker as a shaver?" loud. I honestly must say it startled me at first. I was seriously afraid to touch that moped-engine-out-of-hell to my face.
2. It's not the most stylish thing in the market. Seriously though, what did you expect for about $30.00? It doesn't look like it's about to break at any moment, but it doesn't make you stare in the mirror while holding it either. I'd equate it to that really ugly secretary that can do the job of 15 hot ones. You don't want to look at it, but you probably will miss it if it's gone.
3. [No longer applicable - see update] This thing takes a good while to charge. The instructions say to charge it for 24 hours before using it for the first time, but it also says the charging light goes off when it's fully charged, so I let it charge until the light turned off... TWO DAYS LATER! (can you say "patience"? I can.) I figured it was just the first charge, but then I tried charging it after using it twice and it took a bit over 24 hours to turn off the light during a recharge. All in all, would I recommend it to someone? Probably.
If you buy it knowing its quirks, you won't be disappointed. It's a very good buy for the price. Now don't go comparing it to those $140.00 shavers, it's just not fair. Then again, considering the quality of the shave (the most important part of a shaver, I might add), you might end up comparing it anyway and coming out glad that you saved $110.00.
Just make sure anyone in your household is either awake or is a deep sleeper or you will be shaving outside (OK, I'm exaggerating, but you will definitely have to close the bathroom door).
I haven't really used the trimmer, although I should mention that their 3 positions include the "closed" position, so really it only has two positions: half-way up and fully up. Don't you just love marketing?
Oh, one more thing: the shaver is a bit cumbersome to clean but the included brush helps. It also tends to leave a fine dust on the outside of the shaving head near the blade, nothing a quick blow won't take care though.
Bottom line: it's way too cheap not to take a chance on what might be close to the best shave you can get under 50 bucks. If it was a tad quieter, I'd give it 5 stars in a heartbeat.
UPDATE (07/31/2008): After using it for a while now and going through a few recharge cycles, I'm forced to retract my "Con #3". The shaver is now running for over a week on a single charge (shaving once a day) and it recharges fully overnight. Great charge/fast recharge.
I've also used the trimmer a few times now and it works flawlessly. Straight cuts and no hair tugging. IT just feels right when you try to use it and the position of the trimmer helps a lot in aiming and aligning it to make a straight sideburn trim, for example.
I would definitely give it 5 stars now.
