(More customer reviews)Bought an ES8092 two years ago to replace a discontinued Pansonic model I dearly loved and was giving up the ghost. The ES8092 was as terrible, as bad, as the earlier model was good...very loud, slow (took twice as long to shave with mediocre results, and had to touch up with a blade). Even though I'd tried all the other major brands of shavers with less than stellar results, I was ready to say adios to Panasonic for good. Then I read some reviews of the model preceding the ES8164s and decided to give Panasonic one more chance. Settled on the updated model ($50 less expensive) and, wow, am I glad I did.
I've been using it for about two weeks now and love it. It is quieter than the ES8092, shaves much closer and faster, and the egronomics are far supierior. The handle is thiner/better shaped and the rubberized material is tackier when wet, making it much easier to hold in the shower. Rather than a "christmas tree countdown" set of lights to indicate remaining charge, it has an easy-to-read liquid crystal readout with an orange backlight that gives the per centage of remaining charge. I got 7 shaves on the first charge (I shave in the shower and admittedly linger a bit). Unlike the ES8092, it is not induction charged. Instead you plug into the bottom of the shaver to recharge rather than placing it on a stand (a small add on stand comes with it, as does a soft, zippered, vinyl, travel case, which is a step up from the 8092's cloth pouch and draw string). My last two Panasonics were induction charged and I had my doubts about non-induction charging, but I'm very satisfied with this method; even more so since I travel a lot and the charging cord is smaller and lighter than an induction charging stand to pack. Cleanup is a snap: pour a couple of drops of liquid soap on the shaving head and hold the on button until the ultra high speed mode kicks in. Rinse and you're done... all in thirty seconds and far less expensive than a large footprint cleaning/charging stand that takes up space on the bathroom counter.
While I highly recommend this shaver, there are a few caveats to be aware of. It is possible to cut yourself while shaving--I've done it already. No rash to report as some people experience, but then I've been using a wet/dry panasonic for about 5 years now, so my face is accustomed to it. Be sure when replacing the head cover that it is securely snapped into place. It's very easy to think it's on securely when it isn't. The travel pouch is only big enough to hold the shaver. Charging cord has to be packed separately. Replacement blades and foils are pricey, but then it also shaves a whole lot better than other models.
All in all I consider this the best electric shaver I'ver ever used (have used Braun, Norelco, and Remington previously). The shave is razor blade close if used wet with shave cream or gel. Throat hairs are the trickiest and the 8164s does an excellent job, but I admit I don't always get every one of them, so sometimes I'll still take one or two strokes with a safety razon, but only sometimes. The pop up trimmer is somewhat smaller than the one on the 8092, but it actually trims sideburns, unlike the functionless one on the 8092.
$120 delivered seems like a bargain for this is exceptionally fine shaver, especially considering I forked out $165 a couple of years ago for a crappy ES8092. I'm more than happy with my purchase and would recommend this shaver to anyone. (And, no, I don't work for Panasonic or hold stock in the company.)
